Spring = Gardening season

After a long period of dormancy for many gardens and gardeners, spring is motivation to get out into the garden and get our hands dirty. Unfortunately, the combination of winter rains and spring sunshine combine for fervent weed growth—the bane of any gardener. If you’re like us, you would prefer not to use chemical means to kill weeds, so what are the alternatives? Here are a couple of useful tips:

  • For weeds in pavers – pour boiling water on the offending plant (yes, that’s right, boil up the kettle and empty the contents, being careful not to splash any hot water on yourself!)
  • For weeds in garden beds try spraying vinegar on the offending plant.
  • If you do need to resort to manual means of weed removal, ensure that you don’t bend your back. Kneel (use an old cushion) if you can, or squat and ensure you’re not in one position for extended periods of time.
  • Mulch well to discourage weed growth and retain moisture.
